Instrument Recertification and Calibration Service

Annual recertification and calibration of KIN-TEK instruments is recommended to maintain traceability to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Each instrument is given a multi-point flow and temperature calibration to certified accuracy, as well as a multi-component maintenance check. Certificates are issued with an “as received” report depicting sources of system error. Our KIN-TEK Technical Representative can perform the calibration at our site or yours.

Permeation Tube Recertification Service

In many cases, purchasing a new refillable permeation tube may not be necessary if the certified emission rate has expired. KIN-TEK offers permeation tube recertification, refill, and refurbishing service for most liquid filled tubes, gas filled, gas fed and disposable tubes. PLEASE NOTE: To recertify disposable permeation tubes it must contain more than 40% or more of the compound and are not refilled or refurbished.

Overview

Description

The Span Chek™ is a portable instrument designed for field calibration of toxic gas analyzers, area monitors, and detectors. The unit may be used with passive sensors as well as instruments that have a built-in sample pump. Interchangeable permeation tubes are used to provide a constant output of the toxic gas. This constant output is mixed with a much larger controlled flow of ambient air to generate an accurate concentration of the standard test mixture.

The instrument is designed to generate concentrations from below 1 ppm to over 100 ppm. Concentration is varied by changing the dilution air flow rate, the permeation tube temperature, or the number of permeation tubes used. It can be adapted to produce mixture of a variety of compounds by installing the appropriate tubes of permeation tubes.

The Span Chek™ is self-contained and portable. Dilution air is provided by a small internal compressor. Ambient air is drawn into the unit and purified by passing it though a chemical cartridge type filter. The permeation tube oven temperature is controlled by PID controller at 35 to 50°C. Power is provided by a rechargeable, lead acid battery.

The output of the Span Chek™ is connected directly to an analyzer or to an appropriate chamber placed over the sensing head of a passive detector. In this case, the calibration mixture flows into the chamber and surrounds the sensor head. When calibration is complete, the chamber is removed and the sensor returns to normal service. The calibration mixture simulates the actual sample in all respects including relative humidity and oxygen content.

Airport Security (Dopant Permeation Tubes)

Example Problem: Emissions of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). In addition to the classical pollutants (SO₂ & NO₂), petrochemical processes often emit other toxic chemicals via process stacks and as fugitive emissions. Because these chemicals can affect the environmental quality and health of the surrounding areas, EPA requires monitoring and control of these emissions. HAPs include HCl, HF, toxic organics, chlorinated compounds and H₂S.

Process stacks are monitored by on-line Continuous Emissions Monitors (CEMs). Fugitive emissions are monitored by Fence Line Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Systems (FLAAQS). Frequent calibration and daily validation of these monitors and systems are required by EPA regulations.

The toxic chemicals that are being monitored are very reactive and are not stable as cylinder mixtures. Also when using gas cylinders, EPA procedures require large quantities of gas for each validation, which results in high operating costs.
